Openings and closures
In August 2026, 495,448 companies opened in Brazil and 260,762 companies closed, a net of +234,686. Of those openings, 380,334 opened as MEI (76.8%).

Openings held steady on July 2026, 17.5% above August 2025. In 12 months there were 5,582,040 openings, 15.4% above the 12 months before.
How we count
Each company is counted once, by its head office, from the Receita Federal's CNPJ Open Data. A closure may be recorded with a past date: the latest months may still gain closures in later publications.
